mix it ... vá lá, é sexta!

not everybody understands house music
it's a spiritual thing, a body thing,
a soul thing

Eddie Amador, House Music (1997)

Exemplos?

Now let me see you work (esse corpinho que esteve sentado o dia todo!)
Celeda, Undergound (Addictive Trip Mix)

Inglês/English

A heavy week of work, in which life only passes in front of a screen that changes images between Teams, Google and Sapo accounts. A work week in which passwords are mixed, images are merged into a mixture of files and words no longer make sense in the late afternoon ... so conversations at 8 pm make no sense. And on a Friday, could they be necessary? It doesn't look like they are!

On one of the less joyful days, we rediscovered the version of a very old CD-R with the sound from a Lisbon radio which was becoming known in Porto. Perhaps this is why this week's sound had a touch of revival, among clubs such as SoundPlanet, Rocks or even, 8 Graus Oeste(1) in Portuguese Venice(2) and the extinct Elektro Parade in Porto. It will be this scenario that opens a 21-year-old compilation but that contains the best (or not) made in a year of music ready to bump the dancefloors, reach the sales charts and become classics. Examples? There are a lot  ... Rui da Silva, with Touch me (No. 1 in the UK), Celeda with the repetitive and addictive sound of Underground, Deep Dish and Everything but the Girl, Da Hool and Funkstar Deluxe with Grace Jones and Barry White....

We don't need many explanations, because a Friday with the theme "Do you remember?",  just needs a good speaker in highest volume acceptable, to believe that, soon, an extended version of our favorite hit will be ready to warm up a dancefloor that has been waiting for us for a year ... eagerly! NOw, make room in your living room and ...

Now let me see you work (that body that spent the whole sitting on the sofa)
Celeda, Undergound (Addictive Trip Mix)

(Translations notes: 1 SoundPlanet, Rocks and 8 Graus Oeste were clubs in Porto and Aveiro. 2 Portuguese Venice -  nickname given to the city of Aveiro due to its cannals)

Dedicado a / Dedicated to: Mónica, David, Gaby, Sara e Anabela  (for all the crazy nights at these clubs and parties ... will we have more, soon? I do believe so!)

Let me re-, let me reintroduce myself
Case you forgot, no, I'm not records on your shelf

In 2021, after moments of some very negative energy, we noticed that we are not the ones we were in 2007, but we keep all our originality, with a much more classic taste, Port Wine, or what? But did we really change?

(Probably) NOT! And thankfully ... now, we don't have to be afraid of our originality and what we are, think, believe and love. Thus, Let Me Reintroduce Myself, in a style that combines reggae, ska, pop is a sing-a-long that refers to times of sunset, a caipirinha and very white sand. Furthermore, it proves that when we went through the years of our life, we noticed that every moment from there, was present in our future (will we always be some 90's kid?). Like Gwen Stefany, who needs no introduction, we also had very different passionate musical moments, but they make us what we are today, because we had those sad stories from Cool and we danced until the morning much richer than we are today ...

In short, the single that reached #17 on the Billboard US Digital Sales, only serves as an aperitif to the next album of this girl, who since 1996 has been saying that she is just a girl (I'm Just A Girl), but that she knew, very well, how to transform the world, when became the urban legend of Hollaback Girl.

Hoje arrumamos o quarto e retiramos aquela caixa escondida ...

Viaja no tempo ... Carrega Play!

Today we tidy the room and take out that hidden box ... we find out (again) that we can almost tune in to 107.2 aka Rádio Cidade (later Cidade FM) and listen to music on a chromium tape. This was the radio station that accompanied Portuguese teenagers in the 1990s, with unimaginable jingles and diversified and entertaining programs. After all, how many of you were waiting but ready to record them?

Electricidade was one of those programs we listened religiously, waiting for the dance songs that were in the International Charts and that would brighten up our afternoon. In fact, the program was so famous that it had its first compilation in 94 (on CD, Cassette and Vinyl) to reach the first place of the Sales Charts in Portugal, and the following ones were released until 2004. At the right time, we would listen to the electric ray and the famous "Ahhh Electricidade" and we knew we were going to listen to Rhythm Of The Night (Corona), Saturday Night (Whigfield), Luv 4 Luv (Robin S) or Let The Beat Control Your Body (2 Unlimited) ... music quality aside, as it is irrelevant. In fact, the good times that these compilations have brought in garage balls and school parties are, by themselves, memories to keep and we are going to revive in Love The 90s in May.
You will probably sneeze with the dust that this post brings and see that the (New) Spelling Agreement got really nervous .... but after all, is it not a #throwbackthursday?
Travel in time ... Press Play!

#throwbackthursday au revoir, PARIS?

by perplex3r, em 06.04.17

Palais Garnier, Paris, http://backtobasic.blogs.sapo.pt

One day, we're gonna live in Paris (I promise)
And every night we'll watch the stars
They'll be out for us

English / Inglês
Paris, a single released in 2008 and featured in the self-titled album Friendly Fires (No.21 UK Charts), features background vocals from the American band Au Revoir Simone, but on the remix by Vito de Luca (Aeroplane) they take the singer's place. Unlike the story of the single with the same name released by the Chainsmokers in 2017, in which Paris is a feeling for which we run away from our parents to prove our own value, in this Paris remixed by Aeroplane, we have a trip through an electronic and illuminated city in mixture of disco and 80s synth-pop.
Paris, London, Porto ... regardless of where we are, we look for that place for a life of two. During the day, or during a night sprinkled with lights that highlight our smile, we enter tall buildings, small palaces and bigger palaces that the real estate, which says that is capable of transforming our idea into a dream, shows us. We enter one of them and all the empty space surrounds us, but we feel that our world does not fit under a decorated ceiling.
So we decide to "hold on a little more" because we feel that that we want the starts as the edge of our world, where you come to me, on a hot spring night, almost with no clothes, to the small balcony where I am waiting for you with a chilled bottle of Casal Garcia (wine). It is to this city of Paris that this music transports us and it is this melody that will make us company in this moment.

#throwbackthursday with some Kandi!

by perplex3r, em 30.03.17

disco heaven vinil 2.jpg

Some very sweet Kandi(es) for this Thursday. Here at home, we (re)discovered one of the vinyl editions of a compilation from the label Hed Kandi, also a usual presence in this blog, mainly in the summer. Disco Heaven 02.02 is the soundtrack to our heaven, in which disco is mixed with the dance beats and with the so-called disco-house,featured on the film Studio 54, filled with choruses and voices from Ultra Naté, Shelley Nelson, Amber and the unmistakable Tunde (Lighthouse Family). A total of 8 tracks  in extended versions fill this edition in vinyl and are nothing more, nothing less, than a sample to the compilation edited in CD.
To make this journey through the clouds even more memorable, we have remixes by the Swedish Stonebridge for DaYeene's And It Hurs, by the New Yorker Kenny Dope for Believe by Nathan Haines and by the Frenchman François Kervokian for High by the Lighthouse Family, who also had remixed Moloko's delicious and epic Forever More.
Basically, to enjoy this double edition of the LP to the max, just prepare a fresh drink, full of mint and taste of gin or martini, lift the needle and put  it on the first track. After that, fill the porch with friends, let the sun shine and, since tomorrow is Friday, make a toast to the weekend. Cheers!
