When the music is German, is named in French and sung in English it might seem an exaggerated mixture of languages. However, Alphawezen shows that, we are indeed in a Europe full of influences that can give to the music unique characteristics.
En Passant succeeds L’Áprés-Midi D’un Microphone (2001), from which some of the tracks were played during the modern dance production 0110move in Expo 98 (Portugal) and were also released the fantastic Gai Soleil and Into The Stars. While the first album was more downtempo and experimental electronic, En Passant shows a great evolution of Ernst Wawra and a greater attitude in Asu’s voice when mixing downtempo, electro and minimal. Speed Of Light can establish a bridge between the two albums, while the miminal tracks Welcome To Machinarchy, Prophétique De Cerveau and I Like You tear away with the compassed and calm sounds of the introspective White Noise, the instrumental Wald2 and the delicious Rain.
In this way, this album showed Alphawezen’s audacious attitude and led to the balance between downtempo and minimal on their third album Comme Vous Voulez, only possible after a few interesting experimental moments visible on En Passant.
 

Quando a música é alemã, tem nomes em francês e é cantada em inglês pode parecer uma mistura de línguas um tanto ao quanto exagerada. Porém Alphawezen mostra que, de facto, estamos numa Europa recheada de influências que podem atribuir à música características únicas.
En Passant sucede L’Áprés-Midi D’un Microphone (2001), do qual algumas das faixas estiveram presentes na Expo 98 (Portugal) na produção de dança moderna de 0110move e de onde foram extraídos os fantásticos Gai Soleil e Into The Stars. Enquanto que o primeiro álbum se caracterizava por momentos downtempo e pelo electrónico experimental, En Passant mostra uma grande evolução de Ernst Wawra e uma maior atitude na voz de Asu ao misturar o downtempo com o electro e o minimal. Speed Of Light consegue fazer a ponte entre estes dois álbuns, enquanto que os temas minimal Welcome To Machinarchy, Prophétique De Cerveau e I Like You rasgam com a sonoridade calma e compassada do introspectivo White Noise, do instrumental Wald2 e do delicioso Rain.
Desta forma, este álbum demonstrou uma atitude arrojada de Alphawezen e conduziu ao equilíbrio entre o downtempo e o minimal no seu terceiro álbum de 2007 Comme Vous Voulez, só possível de ser alcançado após momentos experimentais interessantes visíveis em En Passant.

Clear the doubts you might have as this Portuguese production came to stay through the whole Summer of 2009. Selfish Love is a result of the collaboration between Pedro Cazanova and Andrea, an ex-member of the group Non Stop, who ended for the sake of our ears. Although it has curious lyrics and the melody stays in your mind for hours, one cannot call it the best Portuguese production ever. For those who forgot, Delicado came with better and more daring productions, namely the fantastic Light Up (My Cigarette) with Kikka Santos’s voice and also with the not less known The Sound Of Fashion. We also had the opportunity to listen the Elektro Parade anthem On Your Deep Inside by Maurell & Favrelle, So Get Up by Underground Sound Of Lisbon, and also Touch Me by Rui da Silva which went to become a nº1 in the UK Singles Charts.
Is the video, the accent or the soft house beat the problem with Selfish Love? Apparently, it isn’t, as Kontor Records, which releases ATB, Fedde Le Grand and Masters At Work tracks, released the track in Germany.
Therefore, is it too selfish (just) to consider this the best Portuguese dance release of 2009? For those who like happy songs with significant lyrics, which is the case, we can answer no to this question!

Dissipem-se as dúvidas que esta produção portuguesa veio para ficar neste Verão de 2009. Selfish Love é o resultado da colaboração de Pedro Cazanova e Andrea, das antigas Non Stop que, para o bem-estar dos nossos ouvidos, acabaram. Apesar de ter uma letra bastante curiosa e da melodia ficar nos ouvidos horas a fio, não lhe podemos chamar a melhor produção electrónica portuguesa. Para os mais esquecidos, os Delicado já aí estiveram com melhores e mais ousadas produções, nomeadamente o fantástico Light Up (My Cigarette) com a voz de Kikka Santos e o não menos famoso The Sound Of Fashion. Também tivemos a oportunidade de ouvir o hino da Elektro Parade On Your Deep Inside de Maurell & Favrelle, So Get Up dos Underground Sound Of Lisbon, ou ainda mesmo Touch Me de Rui da Silva que atingiu nº1 nos U.K. Singles Charts.
O problema de Selfish Love talvez resida apenas no vídeo, no sotaque e na batidinha house fraquinha, ou não? Aparentemente, a Kontor Records, que edita ATB, Fedde Le Grand e Masters At Work, não achou e assinou também a sua edição em terras germânicas.
Sendo assim, será então demasiado selfish considerar (apenas) esta a melhor edição de dança portuguesa de 2009? Para os amantes de música house alegre com letras com sentido, que é este o caso, consideramos que não!
