Tardes que são passadas nos cafés a estudar, a ver o tempo passar, a ler ou a ouvir música. Naqueles momentos solitários, observamos as mesas à nossa volta, enquanto acendemos um cigarro e sentimos o primeiro travo do café. Temos a nossa mesa com os nossos telemóveis, um livro e os headphones que vamos usar daqui a nada ... entretanto, entram alguns casais, uns felizes, outros abandonados à sua resiliação de namoro prolongado. O senhor mais idoso escreve no seu tablet alguns emails de trabalho, dois senhores de fato preto discutem as notícias, enquanto que a rapariga de cerca de 20 anos fala bem alto ao telemóvel... temos, assim, num só espaço de convívio, um mundo de experiências, corações, amores e vidas.
É nessa mescla de vidas entrelaçadas num café que reside a beleza da simplicidade na letra de Tom's Diner, que podemos muito bem substituir Tom por qualquer espaço que vamos, todos os dias, tomar o nosso pequeno almoço. Originalmente editado por Suzanne Vega em 1982 é o tema de abertura do álbum Solitude Standing (1987), que incluí o aclamado single, embora com uma história bem triste, Luka. Curiosidade de Tom's Diner é que foi remisturado em estilo próprio pelos britânicos D.N.A que editaram o single sem autorização de Vega, tal como acontecia nos finais dos anos 80 em que o hábito de usar samples sem autorização era bastante comum, de forma a oferecer temas conhecidos, mas mais apropriados à club culture que se inciava, por exemplo Black Box com Ride on Time, que samplam Lolleatta Holloway. Após acordo,e com o próprio consentimento de Vega, o single chega ao número 2 da UK Singles Chart, tendo, já sido usado por Giorgio Moroder com Britney Spears, Timbaland e até mesmo a cantora r'n'b Aaliyah com Hot Like Fire e pelo português David Carreira e Bingo Players pela Spinnin' Records.
Em suma, podemos observar e aprender com os outros que estão á nossa volta no ______ (preencher com o teu lugar favorito. Talvez nos iremos inspirar pelas atitudes dos outros ou então continuar a acreditar que estamos no bom caminho.

Afternoons spent at the cafés studying, watching the time go by, reading or listening to music. In those lonely moments, we saw the tables around us, lit a cigarette, and felt the first taste of coffee. We have our desk with our mobile phones, a book and the headphones that we are about to use ... however, some couples enter, some happy, others abandoned to their long-term relationship. The old man writes in his tablet some work e-mails, two guys wearing black suits discuss the news, while the 20-year-old girl speaks very loudly on the  phone ... therefore we have in a single place, a world of experiences, hearts, loves and lives.
It is in this blend of lives intertwined in a cafe that lies the beauty of simplicity in the lyrics of Tom's Diner that we can nicely replace Tom to whatever we go everyday to have our breakfast. Originally released by Suzanne Vega in 1982 it is the opening theme of the album Solitude Standing (1987), which included the acclaimed single, although with a very sad story, Luka. Curious fact about Tom's Diner is that it was remixed in its own style by the British duo DNA who released  the single without Vega's permission, as it was common in the late 1980s, as it was quite common to use samples without the authour's permission, in order to offer well-known songs , but more appropriate for the culture of the club that has started, for example Black Box with Ride on Time, who sampled Lolleatta's Holloway voice. After getting into an agreement, and with Vega's consent, the single arrives at number 2 of the UK Singles Chart, having already been used by Giorgio Moroder with Britney Spears, Timbaland and even the singer r'n'b Aaliyah with Hot Like Fire and by the Portuguese David Carreira and Bingo Players on  Spinnin 'Records.
To sum up, we can observe and learn from others around at ______ (fill in with your favorite place). Maybe we are about ot be inspired by the attitudes of others or continue to believe that we are on the right path.

Hoje arrumamos o quarto e retiramos aquela caixa escondida ... (re)descobrimos que podemos sintonizar a 107.2 aka Rádio Cidade (mais tarde Cidade FM) e ouvir em fita de crómio. Esta era a rádio que acompanhou a adolescência da geração dos anos 90, com jingles inimaginavéis e programas diversificados e divertidos. Afinal, quantos é que esperavam com a cassete pronta na aparelhagem para gravar um desses programas?
Electricidade era um dos que se ouvia religiosamente, à espera das músicas de dança mais cool, que estavam nos Tops Internacionais e que iriam alegrar a nossa tarde. Aliás, o programa foi tão famoso que teve a sua primeira compilação em 94 (em CD, Cassete e Vinil) a atingir o primeiro lugar do Top de vendas em Portugal, e as seguintes editadas até 2004. À hora certa, ouvíamos o raio electrico e o famoso “Ahhh Electricidade” e sabíamos que íamos ouvir Rhythm Of The Night (Corona), Saturday Night (Whigfield), Luv 4 Luv (Robin S) ou Let The Beat Control Your Body (2 Unlimited) ... qualidade musical ou não, isso é irrelevante. Aliás, os bons momentos que estas compilações trouxeram em bailes de garagem e festas na escola são, por si só, memórias a guardar e que vamos poder recordar em Love The 90s agora em Maio.
Provavelmente, vais espirrar com o pó deste post e ver que o (Novo) Acordo Ortográfico ficou deveras nervoso .... mas afinal, é não é um #throwbackthursday?

Today we tidy the room and take out that hidden box ... we find out (again) that we can almost tune in to 107.2 aka Rádio Cidade (later Cidade FM) and listen to music on a chromium tape. This was the radio station that accompanied Portuguese teenagers in the 1990s, with unimaginable jingles and diversified and entertaining programs. After all, how many of you were waiting but ready to record them?
Electricidade was one of those programs we listened religiously, waiting for the dance songs that were in the International Charts and that would brighten up our afternoon. In fact, the program was so famous that it had its first compilation in 94 (on CD, Cassette and Vinyl) to reach the first place of the Sales Charts in Portugal, and the following ones were released until 2004. At the right time, we would listen to the electric ray and the famous "Ahhh Electricidade" and we knew we were going to listen to Rhythm Of The Night (Corona), Saturday Night (Whigfield), Luv 4 Luv (Robin S) or Let The Beat Control Your Body (2 Unlimited) ... music quality aside, as it is irrelevant. In fact, the good times that these compilations have brought in garage balls and school parties are, by themselves, memories to keep and we are going to revive in Love The 90s in May.
You will probably sneeze with the dust that this post brings and see that the (New) Spelling Agreement got really nervous .... but after all, is it not a #throwbackthursday?
