Back To Basic Weekly Chart #1

by perplex3r, em 09.02.08

(English/Inglês)

For the very first time we will have the commentary on Back To Basic Weekly Chart. To start, keeping the number 1 position we find the belgian Tim Jenssens' project Sunfreakz featuring Andrea Britton Counting Down the Days to find me (see video 1), a tune that combines melodic lyrics and a great groove for us to dance, as the Axwell remix gives it an original and catchy touch. The video makes us think about grabbing our stuff and go the beach…observe or get tanned (each of us is free to choose!) Sadly we are still a few months away from the great summer days. Now we all understand why the deejay SexySoundSystem plays this track at the Nova Era Radio, as these are great reasons for that.
Following at number 2 we have Freemasons with Bailey Tzuke, a 20-year-old blond and pretty girl, with a dance version of the 1998 Alanis Morisette's track Uninvited. Ace Of Base are still on number 3 with the electro dark pop mix of their 1992 hit Wheel Of Fortune, due to be release at the end of Februrary/March. They don’t know what planet are you on, and therefore the question What Planet U On by Luciana and Bodyrox is on number 4. John Dalbäck changes positions with Roisin Murphy and climbs to number 5 with Blink, while the ex Moloko vocalist falls down to number 6. As far as the rest of the Chart is concerned, everything is on the same positions as the previous week, except for the Sugababes electro pop single About You Now, that drops off the chart  leaving the number 9 position to Peter Gelderblom (see video 2) and making Imogen Heap enter at number 10 with Hide & Seek, remixed by Tiësto.
Pay attention to these suggestions (just a few) Have fun listenning to the songs on the Chart while you clean your house or you drive to a party.

Roisin Murphy...there's life after Moloko!

by perplex3r, em 06.02.08

Roisin Murphy - You Know Me Better

(Português/Portuguese )

O grupo de dança eclética chamado Moloko foi, sem qualquer dúvida, uma das melhores exportações das terras verdes Irlandesas e das terras de Sua Majestade, com uma mão cheia de hits, como Sing It Back , The Time Is Now e claro, o clássico Forever More.
Porém "all good things come to an end ” como a menina Furtado afirma, e com toda a razão.

The eclectic electronic group Moloko are, without any doubt, one of the best exports from the green Irish lands and from Her Majesty’s Land, with handful of hits like Sing It Back, The Time Is Now and, of course, the all time favourite Forever More.
However, “all good things come to an end” as Nelly Furtado says, and it is true. Due to the couple’s separation, Moloko ended their work as a group in 2003, after the promotion of the album Statues, being the Best Of released only in 2006. Nevertheless, Roisin Murphy decided to move on (and we lift our hands to God for that!) and released two albums: Ruby Blue (2005) and Overpowered (2007). Although her first work did receive very good reviews, it didn’t make it into the UK Album Charts, being only two singles taken from the album: If We’re In Love and Sow Into You, and a few tracks on Grey’s Anatomy.
However, the winds of change came, as Overpowered shows Roisin’s versatility and creativity, and with help of some great names such as Andy Cato, one of the great minds behind Groove Armada, she entered the UK Album Charts at nº20 and the single Let Me Know got into number 28, accompanied by a great video that reminds her dance moves on Forever More.
For the fact that Overpowered is coherent, full of pretty good surprises throughout the 13 tracks (number 13 as a lucky number!), has a great dance feeling, is well mixed and possesses great lyrics it was nominated for the Irish Music Choice Awards. In addition, this blog gives it 4 happy frogs out of five thinking already on the 3rd single due to be released on March 31st. So, here you have what will we listen to (I hope it gets the attention it deserves), namely You Know Me Better, a single that will include the Andy Cato Alternative Mix, remixed by Andy Cato. (The video is not the original one, as it was not released yet)

the 60's are back...who knew?

by perplex3r, em 01.02.08

Sonny J

At the end of 1999 one could hear the seventies sound influencing the dance music, with Moloko’s  Sing It Back on number 1 in the US Dance Charts followed by other artists that also took this seventies wave. The last semester of 2007 was also influenced by this kind of revivalism but with a sound more related to the 60’s. Sonny J (his real name is Sonnington James) from Liverpool had his demo being played on BBC Radio 1, which gave him a contract with EMI and allowed him to release the single Can’t Stop Moving, a very happy song for those happy days when we wake up and the world seems perfect.
One must also add a very well known singer, Frankie Valli…okay, perhaps you don’t remember him, but if one says that he had a number 2 hit with Can’t Take My Eyes Off You in 1967, do you recall him? Valli released a bunch of albums, including the nº1 single for Grease O.S.T., and now we have Beggin’, a very amusing single that makes us want to go to a drive in, drink a milkshake and put some grease on our hair, i.e. Doo-Wop at its best.
Taking advantage of this revivalism, the Welsh singer Duffy will release her debut single Mercy on February 25th followed by her album Rockferry in 3rd of March. Once again, we have a great song and video that is equally good to the previous ones, although the girl is only 23.
Go to your mum and dad’s closet…Boys, take out the leather jackets and grease, girls take out the dresses and the band for your hair….

Frankie Valli
